Last summer I fell in love with all the different purple petunias at the garden center. They had ones with white spots, white edges, white stripes, yellow stripes, white stars in the middle… I let myself go wild and ended up bringing home several containers of each kind and planted them in the far corner of the garden. I got into the habit of visiting the petunias almost daily – appreciating their colors & patterns, watering them, dead-heading the wilted ones, and picking a few to take inside and press. By the time their last blossoms faded in autumn, I had more pressed petunias than I could count!
I waited to do something special with the purple petunias, and somehow turning them into a mandala came to mind. I love how they each complement each others’ unique beauty, and how together they create a sense of harmony. I added mallow flowers, buttercups, pansy & lily petals, and larkspur, and they all joined in seamlessly to the petunia party. I suppose this is the point of a mandala – a place where a unifying whole forms through unique parts coming together, just as they are.
As I put the final flower into this mandala, I heard the words “Love Yourself Into Wholeness.” There was something about that day at the garden center last June – noticing the petunias, choosing them, and then nurturing each other all summer long…. It was a lesson for me. When I bought them, part of me felt it was extravagant & wasteful. But as I cared for them, the petunias ended up giving back to me in countless ways. And now they have become this mandala. They seem like more of an investment now, even little teachers of true abundance! When I look at the petunias in this mandala, they remind me that I am worthy of what contributes to my wellbeing, and that when I chose that, I “love myself into wholeness.” It’s so simple and so amazing all at once, kind of like a mandala!
